Choosing the Right Medical ID

[From The Editor: Having a medical condition that warrants wearing a medical bracelet is often difficult. Our author discusses the choices available for medical ID and makes the process of choosing a medical id easier.]

The hospital experiences that I have gone through in my life have usually been filled with lots of emotion and usually more than a little fear. But over time, I learned how to navigate my way around the hospital and it made each experience a little easier than the last. Dealing with a major medical condition impacts your life in many ways. And adds more than a little confusion into an already hectic life. My experiences in the hospital have shown me that if you can reduce the confusion, it reduces the stress and makes dealing with the condition easier.

When you or someone you care about has a medical condition, choosing the proper medical identification can be daunting. In this article, I discuss many of the options currently available for medical id and hopefully reduce the amount of confusion surrounding this very important item.

When it comes down to it, it is all about your lifestyle --how you live, work and play. Finding the right medical id that fits your needs depends on your lifestyle. Are you adventurous, always playing sports and . Do you work outside, gardening? Are you a fashion diva? These questions impact your choice.

Lifestyle

Consider your lifestyle. An active person who plays sports, or works outdoors will need a sturdier medical id than someone who works indoors.

Are you a swimmer? Exposure to chlorinated swimming pool water is one of the harshest things for medical id jewelry. Different metals react differently to the chlorine. Some will tarnish and some will corrode. Know how the metal type affects the durabiltiy of your medical bracelet.

Is style important to you? If you are like many people, a stylish medical bracelet is more important than a sturdy one. But for a few, my husband included, style takes backseat to performance.
